Aino

A name traditionally given to girls, the meaning of Aino is ‘the only one’. The name was created by the famous Finnish poet Elias Lonnrot, in his epic poem 'Kalevala'. In the poem, Aino is the tragic heroine who chooses to drown herself when she finds out that she has to marry the elderly Vainamoinen. This was then adapted into an extremely successful opera in 1912. Aino University is also the name of a highly regarded university in Japan. In Minami Alps National Park, Mount Aino is the peak of the Akaishi Mountains.
