Argus

The meaning of Argus is ‘guardian’. It is a name typically given to boys and is of Greek origin. It derives from the Old Greek word 'argos', translating to ‘brilliant’ or ‘shining'. According to Greek mythology, Argus was the name of a beast with many eyes, and the expression 'the eyes of Argus' was inspired by him. He was the son of Arestor and a servant of Hera, the goddess of childbirth and marriage. He was all-seeing, so Hera employed him to defend and watch over Io, the princess who Zeus lusted after. But, he was slain by Hermes at the order of Zeus. Hera is said to have taken all of his eyes and laid them out in a peacock's tail when he died. There is a DC comic character named Argus who was inspired by the Greek giant. A variant of this name is Argos which is also the name of Odysseus's dog.
