Atalanta

The meaning of Atalanta is 'balanced' or 'greek huntress'. It is a name typically given to girls and is of Greek origin. The meaning comes from the Greek word 'atalante' which means 'equal in weight'. According to Greek mythology, Atalanta was equal to man and in both of the versions of her story, she was portrayed as a woman of immense talent and worth. In the first version, she was the only woman selected among skilled archers and hunters to hunt down the destructive Calydonian boar that was released by Artemis. She was the first to find and wound the boar. Meleager, one of the hunters, praised her but was reprimanded by his superiors. Her award was taken away by his uncles, who considered it dishonorable to award a woman. The other version tells the story of how Atalanta was set up by her father to get married like other women, despite her disinterest in marriage. She devised a tactic and proclaimed that the only person who could outrun her in a race would be her husband, despite knowing that it was unlikely. A man named Hippomenes managed to divert Atalanta's focus and win her hand in marriage. She was a beautiful woman who was also highly athletic and determined. Thereafter, she became a symbol of 'woman power'.
