Traditionally of Greek origin, the meaning of Cadmus is 'one who excels'. It is a name primarily chosen for boys. In Greek mythology, Cadmus was the name of the serpent-slaying hero who also has its mention in Thebes, a powerful town of prehistorical times. Along with being the discoverer, Cadmus was also known to be the first king of Thebes. According to the ancient myth, Cadmus was sent by his father to rescue his sister Europa, who had been abducted by Zeus, but his endeavor in bringing her back failed. He is credited with being the inventor of alphabets and known for bringing in the art of writing from the Phoenicians to the Greeks and then through the Greeks to the whole world. 'From the East' is another meaning for this name. Named after the Greek hero Cadmus, there is also a city in Syria called Al-Qadmus.
