Caledonia

The name Caledonia has its origin in the Latin word Calēdonia. The meaning of Caledonia is 'Scottish Highlands'. The Roman Empire used the term Caledonia to define the part of Great Britain that locates in the north of the River Forth, including most parts of Scotland. Today, it is a romantic or poetical name to refer to Scotland. During the Roman Empire's conquer of Scotland, the place they called Caledonia was disconnected from the rest of Great Britain by the Antonine Wall. The Romans raided and defeated it several times, but dissimilar to other parts of Britain, it stayed outside the authority of Roman Britain.
Latin historians, such as Tacitus and Cassius Dio, defined the region that lay north of the River Forth as 'Caledonia' and expressed it as inhabited by the Maeatae and the Caledonians which in Latin is Caledonii. Other historians utilized the adjective 'Caledonian' to characterize northern Britain. The name likely originated from the Gallo-Brittonic languages.
Before, Caledonia was used as the name of a place, but now, it is used as a name, probably because of the 'ia' ending, which sounds feminine. The name is given in English and Spanish-speaking countries. Caledonia is an unusual name and equivalently unique last name for everyone.
