Callie
Callie used to be used as a diminutive of the name Calista but in more recent years has begun to be a name on its own. Calista is derived from the Greek word ‘kalista’. The meaning of Callie is ‘most beautiful’, ‘prettiest’ or ‘fairest’. This word was mainly associated with the nymph Callisto, a character from Greek mythology, who was an ardent follower of Artemis. Artemis was the goddess of hunting, wilderness, the Moon, wild animals and chastity. All of the nymphs under Artemis vowed to stay virgins. Zeus, the mighty King of Gods, was so enchanted by her Callisto's beauty that he transformed himself into Artemis and seduced Callisto and she became pregnant. When her pregnancy was discovered, she was expelled from Artemis’ group and Hera, the wife of Zeus, transformed her into a bear. About sixteen years later, when she was almost killed by her son while hunting, Zeus saved her and placed both the mother and son in the sky. These are star constellations we now know as the Ursa Major (Arktos in Greek, translating to ‘the bear’) and Ursa Minor.
