Candace

Taken from a royal title in the Bible, the meaning of Candace is `white', 'fair' or 'bright' and it is of Latin origin. It was taken from the term 'kandake', a title meaning 'lush' or 'innocent', which was typically used for a queen or a queen mother in the ancient African kingdom of Kush. When Philip the Apostle travelled, it is written that he met a woman named Candance, who was deemed 'Queen of the Ethiopians'. The name was also used as an ancient title, for a dynasty of Ethiopian queens mentioned in the New Testament. During the late 1970s and the early 1990s, it was a popular name in the United States. William Faulkner even used the name Caddy, the short form of Candace, as the main character in his 1929 novel called 'The Sound and the Fury'. Other variants are Candice, Candis, Candyce, Kandace (English) and Kandake (Biblical).
