Candida

Candida has Latin origins and the meaning of Candida is 'candidus'. This was used to refer to the colour white, or things that were extremely clean and bright. Candida, thus, means 'snow white', 'pure' and 'bright'. White has traditionally been seen as a symbol of purity, innocence and salvation. In Rome, politicians wore the colour white to reflect these qualities, leading to the words 'candidate, 'candid' and eventually, Candida. The name Candida was given to a number of saints, including a woman who was miraculously healed by Saint Peter. The name has several translations, including 'Candide' in French, 'Cândida' in Portugal and 'Cándida' in Spain. The name suddenly increased in popularity after the release of George Bernard Shaw's play named "Candida", released in 1897. In recent years, the most famous Candida has been Candida Doyle, who was the keyboard player for the English rock bank known as Pulp.
