Genetic analysis has revealed that the dwarf cassowary is more closely connected to the Northern Cassowary than either is to the Southern Cassowary, and emus are their closest living relatives. A fossil species was reported from Australia, however, due to biogeography, its identification is uncertain. It may be a member of the prehistoric Emuarius genus, which included primitive emus that resembled cassowaries. Cassowary is a very rare name.
