Chess

The meaning of Chess is 'independent' or 'unbound'. It is a variant of Chesse, which were the boards used by soldiers to make a bridge over water. Chess is also said to be derived from the Latin word 'chester', meaning 'cantonment'. Chess is a board game played by two players. It is a battle of wits, with every type of chess piece having its own unique moves. Each player moves their pieces, trying to steal each other's pieces and the main objective of the game is to steal your opponent's king. Chess originated in India, where it was called Shatranj or Chaturang. The game travelled from there to Arabian and Persian countries where it got famous as 'shah', meaning king. It didn't get the name Chess until later, due to a mispronunciation by medieval Europeans. The word is also a variation of the French word 'eschec', meaning failure. Some famous people who bear this name are Richard Chess, an American poet from New Jersey and Lisa Chess who is an American actress famous for her role in 'Star Trek'.
