Darcy

Jane Austen’s spectacular literary work, 'Pride And Prejudice', catapulted the name Darcy in the eyes of the public. It is believed to have both Irish and French roots. Some people argue that Darcy comes from the Gaelic name ‘O’Dorchaide’. In the 12th century, before they were invaded by the Normans, Ireland was split into a number of mini-kingdoms, which were ruled by a number of family clans. It was said that one of these rulers was named Dorchaide, due to his sinister-looking appearance, and so the meaning of Darcy is ‘a descendant of the dark’, ‘the dark one’ or ‘from the fortress’. It is also believed that Darcy comes from the Norman family D’Arcy, from Arcy in France. The Normans living in this place prefixed ‘D’ with the place name to indicate where they came from. These Normans later mingled with the English communities, who anglicised the name into Darcy.
