Electra

The meaning of Electra is ‘shining’ or ‘incandescent’. It is a name typically given to girls and is of Greek origin. Electra is the name of a Greek mythological figure. She was the heroine of many Greek tragedies. Electra is believed to have formed a plan to kill her mother and her lover, Aegisthus, in retribution for the murder of their father. She carried out the plan with the help of her brother, Orestes, whom she sent away after her father’s death in the hope that he would execute the plan. Years later, Orestes returned and killed both their mother and her lover. She is also thought to be the goddess of the sea clouds and the inspiration for the English word ‘electricity'.
