Florine
The name Florine is a female variant of Florien or Florian. French Alpine skier Florine de Leymarie took part in the Turin Olympic Winter Games in 2006. The French Ski Federation honored her and David Poisson as Rookies of the Year in 2005. French crusader Florine of Burgundy was the child of Sybilla of Burgundy and Duke Odo I of Burgundy. While leading 1500 cavalry to the First Crusade, Florine with her spouse Sweyn the Crusader were ambushed by Turks as they advanced quickly across the Cappadocian plains. Sweyn, who was outnumbered, fought back for the duration of the day but was unable to defeat the Turks despite his valiant efforts and the battle axes of his men. Florine battled bravely by his side. After witnessing the deaths of all of their knights and most devoted servants around them, they both collapsed to the ground together on the battlefield of Philomelium. American modernist painter Florine Stettheimer was also a feminist, theater designer, poet, and salonnière. Stettheimer created a feminine, dramatic painting style that reflected her experiences in New York City and the people she knew. The meaning of Florine is 'blossom, pure'.
