A civil rights campaigner from Indiana, Katherine Flossie Bailey, founded a local chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1918 in Marion, Indiana. After the double massacres of Thomas Shipp as well as Abram Smith in 1930, she became particularly engaged in the campaign for equality and justice.
