Fonso
The name Fonso stems from the Germanic (Gothic) name 'Adalfuns / Hildefons', which combines the words '*hildiz / *aalaz' (battle, struggle / noble, nobleman, aristocratic, eminent, glorious, excellent) and '*funsaz' (ready, to predispose, willing, eager, to tread). The meaning of Fonso is 'eagerness for combat, readiness for battle, nobility, and bravery'. The first element, which over time gave rise to various names, was combined into a single form and consequently into a single family of names. Due to the numerous Visigoth rulers and their successors, the name first became widely used in Spain and the Iberian Peninsula. The prominent religious order of the Redemptorists was founded by Italian Catholic bishop Saint Alphonsus Maria de Liguori (1696–1787), a spiritual author, scholastic thinker, and theologian. Pope Gregory XVI declared him to be a saint in 1839. In 1871, Pope Pius IX named him a Doctor of the Church. Alfonso Guilleard Soriano, a retired left fielder and second baseman in professional baseball, was born in the Dominican Republic on January 7, 1976. He participated in baseball with the Hiroshima Toyo Carp of Nippon Professional Baseball as well as the New York Yankees, Texas Rangers, Washington Nationals, and Chicago Cubs of Major League Baseball (MLB).
