Hypatia
The meaning of Hypatia is ‘high’ or ‘supreme’. It is a name generally given to girls and is of Greek origin. It is formed from the Greek words ‘hypatos’ which means ‘supreme’ or 'high'. It was popularized by the Egyptian philosopher and mathematician, Hypatia of Alexandria. She was also the daughter of the philosopher Theon. Hypatia has been mistakenly credited with the invention of astrolabes and hydrometers for a long time, even though they were already in use. She devoted her life to her work and is now regarded as an icon of feminism. Hypatia followed in her father's footsteps and was dubbed a 'universal genius'. In 1953, a Greek writer named Charles Kingsley published a book called 'Hypatia' where he describes her as 'the last of the Hellenes'. She left behind a remarkable career when she was murdered and publicly prosecuted in 415 AD. In 2015, an exoplanet orbiting the star Iota Draconis was formally named Hypatia, after the Egyptian philosopher following a systematic voting process. Additionally, her name was also given to a lunar impact crater.
