Iola

The meaning of Iola is ‘violet-colored dawn’. It is a name typically given to girls and is of Greek origin. It comes from the word ‘ion’ which means ‘purple flower’. Iole is a variant of Iola. According to Greek mythology, Iole was the daughter of King Eurytus of Oechalia. She was one of the lovers of Heracles and is indirectly responsible for his death. When she was old enough, her father arranged a contest for her hand in marriage. Heracles won but her father denied it because he was afraid that Heracles would hurt her. Eventually, Heracles married another woman but returned in pursuit of Iole. His wife feared that he would leave her so she unknowingly fed him a love potion, which proved lethal for Heracles. Iole married the eldest son of Heracles, Hyllus, after his father had expressed his desire for the marriage. Iole and Hercule’s story was featured in the 1958 movie, titled 'Hercules'. 'Iola Leroy' is the name of an 1892 novel written by Frances E. W. Harper with a strong theme about prejudice and older social issues.
