Ixora

Ixora is a genus of flowering shrubs that can be found abundantly in the tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. West Indian Jasmine, Jungle Flame, and Jungle Geranium are some of their other common names. These plants have leathery, evergreen leaves and blossom large clusters of tiny flowers. A great choice for bonsai, the traditional Japanese art for growing miniature trees, Ixora shrubs are often cultivated for ornamental purposes. Ixora is the Portuguese variation of the Sanskrit term ‘Isvara’, commonly used to address Hindu deities, especially Lord Shiva. Hence, the meaning of Ixora can be deciphered as ‘The lord’. Hindus often offer flowers of Ixora while worshiping their deities, which is also used in traditional Indian medicine such as Ayurveda. The name Ixora is typically considered feminine, and parents mostly use it for their girl child.
