Jadwiga

The name Jadwiga is the Polish translation of the Greek name Hedwig. Hedwig is a combination of two Greek words: ‘hadu’ meaning battle and ‘wig’ meaning 'fight'. Therefore, in Polish, the meaning of Jadwiga is 'a warrior princess'. It was first seen in the 14th century; Jadwiga of Poland was the first female monarch of Poland and kept her throne from 1384 until she died. Multiple historians deem her one of Poland's greatest rulers as iinstead of marrying the man that she loved, she married Wladyslaw-Jogaila, which led to Poland becoming one of the largest states in East Europe. She was known for being extremely generous and charitable and opened numerous schools, hospitals and churches during her reign. It was because of this that she was canonised and is now a saint in the Catholic Church.
