Jasper

Jasper is taken from the Latin word 'Gaspar', which comes from the Hebrew word 'gizbar'. The meaning of Jasper is ‘the treasurer’ or ‘the bringer of treasure’. Jasper is widely considered as an alternative form of the name Casper. Casper was the name of one of the Three Wise Men (also called as the Magi) mentioned in the Bible. The story goes that The Three Magi, named Casper, Balthasar and Melchior, followed a star to see the baby, Jesus. They famously bought the baby gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh as offerings. The name Jasper is therefore associated with wisdom and giving. There is also a Jasper gemstone, identified by its reddish, freckled hue. In Ancient Greece, the Jasper stone was also known as the 'spotted stone', due to its black flecks. The name Jasper is slowly increasing in popularity; in 2019 Jasper was the 136th most popular boys' name in the US, and 84th most popular in England.
