Jezebelle

The classical Hebrew origin name Jezebelle alternatively spelled Jezebel, is well-known to those familiar with the Hebrew Bible. The meaning of Jezebelle in Hebrew is 'pure' or 'virginal' and is mainly accepted as a girl's name. According to the Hebrew Bible, Jezebel, a Phoenician princess, married the king of Israel. As the queen, she introduced the worship of the Tyrian god, Baal-Melkart, in Israel and ordered that all the prophets of the Israeli God Yahweh be slain. To cut a long story short, these transgressions against the established Hebrew God finally led to Jezebelle's execution. From a more modern point of view, however, we may interpret Jezebelle's actions, though violent, as those of a rebellious woman who challenges the established order. The name Jezebel is an anglicized version of the Hebrew name that has been appropriated by American popular culture through a film named after her (1938), in a popular music album called Jezebel (1941), and the famous actress Paulette Goddard played the titular role in a film called 'Sins of Jezebel' (1953). Fortunately, we found positive alternative interpretations of Jezebelle as society progressed. In 2007, a blog titled 'Jezebel' introduced issues of women's rights through a reinterpretation of the story of Jezebel. In her fictional feminist work 'The Handmaid's Tale' (1985), the author Margaret Atwood described how women in a fictional society were pushed into prostitution and called Jezebels. Jezebelle as a name, therefore, is controversial, and its meaning arrived at through different interpretations.
