Lea

The meaning of the name Lea is ‘a vast meadow’, ‘a pasture’, ‘delicate’ or ‘languid’. Lea is taken from the Hebrew name Leah. In the stories in the Hebrew Bible, Leah is Jacob’s first wife and Rachel’s older sister. Jacob was in love with Rachel, however, to be allowed to marry her Jacob had to offer seven years of servitude to her father, Laban. Upon the completion of the seven years, Jacob is tricked by Laban into marrying Leah instead of Rachel, as it was against the custom to marry the younger offspring before the older ones. This name was adopted by the Puritans and has become widespread among the Christian communities. In contrast, according to the Hawaiian mythology, Lea was the goddess of the canoe builders.
