Lilaea
Derived from a mythical water nymph after which the Greek town of Lilaia is named, the meaning of the name Lilaea is ‘longed for.’ It is usually a name given to a girl, with its roots in the ancient Greek name lilaiomai. Lilaea or Lilaia refers to either of these two women in Greek mythology: one, Lilaea, a Naiad of the same-named spring. She was the daughter of Cephissus, the river deity. The ancient polis of Lilaea commemorates her, the contemporary hamlet of Lilaia in Phocis, and the asteroid 213 Lilaea. Secondly, Lilaia, a maenad whose name appeared in a 20th-century vase painting. Biologically, Lilaea is a monotypic genus of water plants with only one species, Lilaea scilloides, often known as blossoming quillwort or awl-leaf lilaea.
