Lilinoe

According to Hawaiian mythology, the meaning of Lilinoe is ‘A goddess of mists,’ ‘goddess of haze,’ or ‘fine mist.’ There are stories in Hawaiian mythology about four snow goddesses who lived in the mountains north of Kilauea. One of the four gods was named Lilinoe. On the high peaks, they wore beautiful cloaks made of snow, which they sometimes traded for clothes made of golden sunshine. They were nature goddesses who covered mountain peaks with snow. When the maidens came down from the mountains and headed to the sea, the snow would melt into life-giving streams. Therefore, giving Lilinoe the meaning ‘fine mist’ or ‘rain.’ The names of the other three goddesses were Kahoupokane, Poliahu, and Waiau. Also, Lilinoe is the Hawaiian name for the fine mist that blankets Hawaii and Maui’s mountains and cliffs. The name is traditionally associated with the feminine gender. According to Hawaii State Archives, Lilinoe appears as the mononym of five women and one male in the 19th-century marriage records.
