Lydda
Lydda is of Hebrew origin. The meaning of Lydda is 'a standing pool'. It is a name approved for girls. Lydda has strong biblical references, Lydda is the New Testament name for the Old Testament city of Lod which means 'travail'. The city was founded by Shamer from the tribe of Benjamin (1Chronicles 8:12). Lydda was a town near Joppa and the maritime plain of Sharon. Apostle Peter found several Christians living in the town and his healing of Aeneas who had been bedridden for eight years helped spread the gospel throughout the area. It was also in Lydda that Peter was asked, by two Christians who came from Joppa, to visit the city (Acts 9:36 - 38). His visit led to the miraculous raising from the dead of Dorcas. The stream outside the town still bears the name of 'Abi-Butrus' (Peter), in memory of the apostle.
Lydda was afterward rebuilt by Hadrian, and changed its name to Diosopolis meaning 'the city of Zeus'. It was destroyed by a Mongol tribe in 1271. The modern village of Ludd still occupies that site today.
