Marleen

Marleen is a female name and more of a wordplay created by combining the names Mary and Magdalene. Both these names have a Biblical reference, and the meaning of Marleen is, therefore, 'sea pearl', 'beloved', and 'rebelliousness'. It also somehow refers to a woman from Magdala. The name Marleen was heavily used across the 1900s as one of the popular names. It was a name attributed to many famous personalities and public figures from political, arts, sports, and athletic backgrounds. A few of the popular people known by this name are Marleen Barth from the ’60s, who was a Dutch politician; Marleen Goris, a writer-cum-director from the mid-1900s; and Marleen S Barr, an American author from the 1950s. Another Dutch politician who lived from the ’50s until 2015 was also named Marleen de Pater-van der Meer. There is even a piece of literature titled 'Marleen', an Australian TV play that aired in 1966. A variation of this name is Merlyn. It became popular, especially because of the Oscar-winning actress Merlyn Streep.
