Matilda

Matilda comes from the Latin translation of Mahthildis, which is an Old German name. Mahthildis is made from its elements ‘maht’ and ‘hild’. ‘Maht’ translates to ‘might’ or ‘power’ and the German ‘hild’ translates to ‘war’ or ‘battle’. Therefore, the meaning of Matilda can be summarised as meaning ‘mighty in battle’ or ‘a strong warrior’. Matilda of Ringelheim, also well known as Saint Matilda, was the wife of Henry the Fowler, as well as the first Ottonian queen. It is said that she was extremely charitable, righteous and humble. Furthermore, she was known for her utmost devotion to charity, prayer, and for her strong but just judgement. The name Matilda became a people’s favourite during her reign. The wife of William the Conqueror was also called Matilda. Known as Matilda of Flander, she was the Duchess of Normandy and the Queen of England. Mara Wilson starred in the movie ‘Matilda’, which was adapted from Roald Dahl’s novel with the same name and helped to bring the name Matilda back in recent years.
