Onesimus
The name Onesimus is traditionally given to boys and is the Latin form of the Greek name Onesimos. The literal meaning of Onesimus is 'beneficial, profitable'. The biblical meaning of the name is 'useful'. Though the name is rarely used nowadays, it was once a famous name because of its mention in Christian Biblical Canon.
Onesimus was an escaped slave of Philemon. After robbing his master, he fled to Rome, where he met St Paul, who converted him to Christianity and sent him back to his master Philemon with an epistle bearing his name. As St. Paul is the one who earlier converted Philemon to Christianity, he thought of uniting the two. In the epistle that appears in the New Testament, St. Paul implored Philemon to accept Onesimus as3 a 'faithful and beloved brother' and even offered to pay for anything that Onesimus took. Many believed he was the one to be named a bishop in Ephesus by Ignatius Theophorus. The journey of Onesimus from being a slave to a brother to the bishop makes this name significant for Christians. However, the name is not so popular now among younger people. 'Obvious' is the Greek version of the name Onesimus.
