Phaedra
The meaning of Phaedra is ‘bright’. It is a name typically given to boys and is of Greek origin. The name derives from the Greek word ‘phaidros’ which means ‘brilliant’ or ‘shiny’. According to Greek mythology, Phaedra was the name of the daughter of King Minos and Queen of Crete, Pasiphae. Her story inspired the term 'Phaedra complex' as a proposed psychological complex. She was married to Theseus, the founder of Athens however Phaedra fell in love with her step-son, Hippolytus. Hippocyltus was the son of Theseus born by Hippolyta. Phaedra’s strong desire for her step-son was thought to have been intentionally seeded by Aphrodite. While there are different endings, the common one is that Hippoylus is killed by a curse cast his father placed on him. Phaedra then takes her own life by suicide. Her story inspired the themes for different forms of art including literature, music and movies such as the 1922 American drama movie titled 'Phaedra.' The film is a remake of the play named ‘Hippolytus’ which was based on the tragedy of Hippocyltus and Phaedra. In the American film, Anthony Perkins plays a modern Hippocyltus whose name is Alexis.
