Raven

The meaning of Raven is 'blackbird' or 'crow'. Raven is said to have originated in Old Norse mythology, as two ravens belonged to the Norse God Odin. As a result, Odin is not only known as the King of Norse Gods, but also as the raven-god. Every day Odin would dispatch the birds in search of new knowledge. In the evening, the ravens would return, sit on his back, and tell him of new things they had learned, including everything they had learnt about his enemies. Their names were Hugin and Munnin, which means 'thought' and 'memory' respectively. As a consequence, the word Raven is synonymous with knowledge and wisdom in Norse culture. People have perceived the name in two different ways. Some cultures see it as a sign of prosperity and growth, while others see a raven as a sign of misfortune and gloom. One famous figure with name is Raven Klassen, who is a professional tennis player for South Africa. Raven is also the birth name of Mystique, a well-known character from the 'X-Men' comics.
