Roark

The meaning of Roark is 'illustrious and mighty'. This unique surname was ascribed to some of the most princely families in Ireland. Roark has other variations like Rourke and O'Rourke. This surname is reportedly one of the oldest in the world. People say it originated in the 10th century after a young prince named Ruarc died and people mourned his death. In popular culture, it was used in Ayn Rand's 'The Fountainhead', where the central character was named Howard Roark. Roark is pretty commonly used in Ireland to name boys. Roark is more often used as a surname than a first name. Interestingly, the surname Roark was initially found in the counties of Leitrim and Cavan, the western half of the kingdom of Breifne in the Leinster province of Ireland. Another famous person of importance with the surname Roark or Rourke was the noted King of Breifne, Tiernan O'Rourke. This king was the leader of the clan known as the Ui Briuin. He ruled over Breifne and was first mentioned in the chronicles in 1124. O'Rourke had a huge cavalry and was once defeated by Conchobhar MacLochlainn at Ardee in 1128.
