Rowan

Rowan is an anglicized variant of the Irish name Rúadhán and the meaning of Rowan is taken from the Gaelic word for 'red-haired' or 'red one'. The name was first borne in the sixth-century by a Christian from County Tipperary, Saint Rowan, who is known for being one of Ireland's Twelve Apostles. Though Rowan has traditionally been a boy's name, it can also be used as a name for girls. In Scandinavian countries, the name Rowan refers to the rowan tree, which is known for its bright red berries. In the Old Norse language, Rowan comes from the word 'iranian', which meant 'going red' or 'getting red', once again linking the name Rowan to the colour red. In Celtic practice, the rowan tree was worshipped for its harmony, excellence and its ability to endure. They believed it to be a holy tree, as the roots would often evoke the five-pointed star that they worshipped, as did the five-pointed stem that came with each berry. The most famous figure with his name is the British actor Rowan Atkinson, who is known for his iconic character named 'Mr Bean'.
