Triton

The meaning of Triton is ‘God of the sea’. It is a name typically given to boys and is of Greek origin. The name comes from the Greek mythological god, Triton who was the son of Poseidon and Amphitrite. They were the god and goddess of the sea. He is depicted in modern art as a merman, half-fish and half-human who often carries a trident with him. The most famous depiction of Triton is in the Disney movie, 'The Little Mermaid', where the main character Ariel, is a princess and daughter of King Triton who rules the underwater kingdom of Atlantica. King Triton is allegedly the son of Poseidon in the movie. Another reference of Triton is made in DC’s 'Aquaman' comic series, where Aquaman challenges Triton to a duel overseen by Poseidon. Aquaman wins but is blinded by Poseidon for ‘humiliating a god’. In 1846, an English astronomer named William Lassell discovered Neptune’s largest moon which was later called Triton, inspired by the Greek god.
