Callista

The meaning of Callista is ‘most beautiful’. It is a name typically given to girls and is of Greek origin. The name derives from Kallisto or Callisto, a Greek nymph and the daughter of King Lycaon. According to legend, she was seduced by Zeus, the god of thunder who disguised himself to lure Callisto. She eventually became pregnant and was banished by Diana, a goddess of whom she was a follower. The tales of Callisto and Zeus' illegitimate child angered Juno, the wife of Zeus. Thus, she transformed Callisto into a bear but could not do the same to her son as Zeus hid him. Callisto wandered about living the life of a bear but met her son, Arcas, in the forest years later. Unknown to the fact that the bear was Callisto, Arcas almost shot her. But, Zeus cast them into the sky as the constellations now known as Ursa Major and Ursa Minor. They are also known as ‘The Great Bear’ and ‘The Little Bear’ respectively.
