Hyacinth

The meaning of Hyacinth is ‘blue flower’ or ‘precious’. It is a name typically given to girls and is of Greek origin. It derives from the Greek name Hyacinthus. Hyacinthus was the name of a Spartan prince who was Apollo's lover in Greek mythology. However, Zephyrus, the god of west winds, fancied Hyacinth. Hyacinth died as a result of the envious rivalry between Zephyrus and Apollo. According to legend, during a game of Quoi between Apollon and Hyacinth, Zephyrus veered Apollon’s disc off-course leading to Hyacinth’s death. When Hyacinth died, Apollon sprung flowers from the blood of Hyacinth. Saint Hyacinth was the name of a Christian martyr who is popularly recognized as the brother of Saint Protus. They died after being beheaded for the refusal to give up their Christian faith. Hyacinth is also one of the names of the founding fathers of Russian sinology.
