Hyacinth
The meaning of Hyacinth is ‘blue flower’ or ‘precious’. It is a name typically given to girls and is of Greek origin. It derives from the Greek name Hyacinthus. Hyacinthus was the name of a Spartan prince who was Apollo's lover in Greek mythology. However, Zephyrus, the god of west winds, fancied Hyacinth. Hyacinth died as a result of the envious rivalry between Zephyrus and Apollo. According to legend, during a game of Quoi between Apollon and Hyacinth, Zephyrus veered Apollon’s disc off-course leading to Hyacinth’s death. When Hyacinth died, Apollon sprung flowers from the blood of Hyacinth. Saint Hyacinth was the name of a Christian martyr who is popularly recognized as the brother of Saint Protus.
