Demeter

The meaning of Demeter is 'earth mother' and the name is of Greek origin. In Greek mythology, she was the goddess of corn, the harvest and agriculture. The name also means 'mother-earth' and 'of Demeter'. 'Dedicated to Demeter' and 'son of Demeter' are its other meanings. It was believed that goddess Demeter made the crops grow each year and so, the first loaf of bread would be sacrificed in her honor. An Olympian goddess, Demeter is also said to be 'a protector of women' and is believed to be linked to the seasons. There is a famous Demeter statue in the British Museum in London.
